Instructions for the care of your retainers

Congratulations and well done!!

You have successfully completed the active phase of your orthodontic treatment!

To retain your teeth in their current position when your braces are removed, retainers are used. Retainers are either removable or bonded (permanent). Removable retainers should be taken out for contact sports, eating, drinking and cleaning.

Your must wear the retainers as directed (except for eating). Over time we will gradually reduce wear to one night per week.

Cleaning is best carried out with a toothbrush and soap. Do not grip the whole retainer in the palm of your hand, as this may cause it to break. Do not use hot water for cleaning as this may cause the retainer to distort. Cool water is better.

When first fitted the retainers will feel a bit large and your mouth may water more than usual. Speech will be a little difficult at first but will improve within the first week.

While wearing the retainers your teeth are more prone to decay and gum disease. It is therefore important to reduce the amount of sweet sugary things you eat, especially in between meals and last thing at night.

Remember – a lot of time and effort has been spent on straightening your teeth. If you do not wear the retainers as directed your teeth may return towards their original position. You may think nothing is happening if you do not wear your retainers, but you will find that by the time you notice, the retainers will no longer fit and nothing can be done to help!

You should not experience discomfort with the retainers. If you do experience discomfort or are unable to wear the retainers, or if you damage it, please contact the surgery immediately. Do not wait until your next visit!!
